Chapter Twelve

David and I see each other almost every day over the next two weeks, at his place or the club. We dine in restaurants all over the city. We spend evenings and weekends together. My reservations about his sincerity melt a bit with every laugh, every endearment, and every touch. I sleep at my townhouse on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights when I have a class the next day or need to be in my office in the morning. I spend the rest of my nights warm and happy in David’s bed. I have to share him with his endless stream of corporate expansion calls, but he always turns his phone off on the nights I stay with him.

The sex is mind-blowing! The man is delightful. I would have been perfectly happy and ready to move forward with my new life if I wasn’t confronted with that intransigent stack of unsigned divorce papers every time I returned home. The unease over my lies of omission needles deeper, tormenting me more severely as every day passes.

After two weeks of laughing and fucking and guilt and anxieties, David has a three-day trip to Philadelphia. He leaves on a Saturday afternoon and although he tells me to make myself at home at his place until he returns, I can’t get comfortable. I need to take care of my situation back at the townhouse.

That is my plan, but, Saturday night, I crash at Diana and Sarah’s. I spend most of Sunday at the gym and sneak into my own home late Sunday night like an errant teenager. When I see Jonathan’s car parked in our garage for the first time in weeks, I briefly consider knocking on his door and having a midnight confrontation, forcing him to finally sign the papers. I pause briefly at the guest room door before I decide it’s too late and skulk to my bedroom like the coward that I am.

Jonathan’s car is already gone when I wake Monday morning and I leave for class stewing in regrets. I move through my lecture that day like a cyborg, rattling off all the pertinent information and doling out the next week’s reading questions without ever being fully present in the small seminar room. I exhale deeply at the end and skip the part where I ask if there are additional questions. I never linger after class and today is no different.

Diana catches up with me on the way to my car, her breathing labored as if she’d run to catch up with me.

“Agnes, wait. You left this at the house yesterday.”

The scarf extended in her hand isn’t mine and I look between her and her meager offering before I bite into my cheek. A fall breeze forces a mutual shiver before she smooths her tidy ponytail with a gulp.

“What’s up, Diana?” I ask. “Why are you being weird?” A mix of irritation and amusement colors my smile. Diana is not one for dissimulation, generally.

“Why are you being weird?” she snips back.
